5.5 Pounds GONE in 3 days

I'm doing a cleanse, ya'll. I'm on 7 of the 9 days. I'm down 5.5 pounds and several inches.

Over a year ago I gained 10 pounds when I went through my divorce. I've never really struggled with my weight, and although 120 lbs isn't overweight, it looks like a lot on my small frame. I grew up doing competitive gymnastics and the love of working out stuck with me through the years after I quit. I've never really had a hard time getting back in shape but for whatever reason, I've only lost 3 of the pounds I gained almost a year ago, despite regular workouts and eating healthy. I've toned up but couldn't get rid of this layer of fat that seemed to want to snuggle my muscles. I finally figured it must be toxins and hormonal imbalance due to my IUD (took it out about a month ago), and after watching a friend go through the same exact struggle and finally lose the weight and keep it off after doing this cleanse I decided to try it.

I have two more days of deep cleansing. See you then!

Apple Butternut Squash Soup

I am really digging my Health Master Elite! Tonight I tried out one of the recipes from the book that came with it, and added a few of my own ingredients. It turned out delicious!!! Even the kids were  asking for seconds! Along with the soup I served bib lettuce leaves with cherry tomatoes. We just sprinkled a little lime juice on top then wrapped them up like little rolls and dipped into our soup!

Like I mentioned, I made this with my Health Master.
It can be made in any kind of blender that has the same "cooking" options, like a Vitamix. If you don't have anything like that you can cook it on the stovetop.

You need:

-One butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cooked
-1 Red Delicious apple cored and chopped
-1 clove of garlic, peeled and chopped
-1 small onion, peeled and chopped
-1 sprig of thyme, stem removed
-1 tbsp coconut oil
-1 tbsp cinnamon
-2 cups of low sodium vegetable broth
-sea salt and pepper to taste
-lime wedges
-1 tbsp coconut sugar (optional)

-Sauté onion, garlic, Apple and thyme in coconut oil for about three minutes.
-Add all ingredients except salt and pepper and coconut sugar to blender. If you are using a Health Master/vitamix, turn speed up to 8 (medium high) and blend for 8 minutes.
-Add coconut sugar and blend for about 10 seconds.
-Plur into bowl amd squeeze with lime juice. Add salt and pepper if desired. Serve and enjoy!

*STOVETOP: after sautéing ingredients, add the rest of the ingredients minus the coconut sugar. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes then add the coconut sugar at the very end. Stir in and remove from the stove. Blend until desired consistency is reached.

Red

RED LIPS have been my signature lip color since high school. It's been a long time since I was 15. Like...(hold on I'm counting on my fingers....) like 17 years this Saturday. WHAT THE HELL. Why did I just do that to myself? Why did I just do the math stuff? Now it's for reals, dude. I can't believe I'm days away from turning 32. Okay, whatever. Moving on. I'm over it. My point is, is that over the span of those 17 years (what the HELL) I have tried a whole lotta red lipsticks. I still haven't found the perfect one. Let me share with you what I expect every time I shell out money for a new red lip product:

It has to smell good, stay put (I kiss a lot of cute little cheeks throughout the day) it has to be the perfect shade of red, it has to be easy to apply, it has to make me feel like a badass sexy lady, it has to be made of cruelty free ingredients and not tested on animals. I'm not high maintenance at all.  Never have I found one that actually meets all of my standards. Until NOW. (Cue trumpets and angel choir).

I came across Lime Crime cosmetics on Instagram when the lovely Renee Olstead shared a photo of her kisser decked out in Red Velvet. It took me a few months to come around and actually order it, but after so many a rave review, I finally caved. I am happy to say it meets all of my strict requirements and I never want it to go away. Please, Lime Crime, stay around forever and ever. I love you.

Hashtag say what?

Created a hashtag for all my foodie posts on Instagram. Listen how clever: I don't eat meat, and my name is Melissa, but a plethora of peeps call me "Liss". So instead of "meatless" it's "meatliss". Right?RIGHT?! Sometimes I wish I could marry myself. So please follow me, my friends and let's be instabuds!

Eating

I've recently upgraded to a HCRV lifestyle, and I have to say I feel amazing, emotionally, mentally, and physically. About two years ago I cut out meat, than slowly started cutting out dairy and eggs. I also started proper food combining about 4 years ago. All have been extremely beneficial to my health. I believe health should be a lifestyle, not just something we choose when we want to lose weight or become sick. How about a life where you rarely get sick and you maintain your perfect body weight, while feeling great mentally and emotionally.

As I have taken these steps over the years, becoming more aware of what I put in my body, how our actions impact the environment, and that animals are NOT here for our selfish consumption, I have learned quite a bit about what our bodies truly need and continue to learn and implement these lessons.

The HCRV lifestyle made total sense to me when I came across it about 6 months ago, but it seemed like a such a big commitment and change, so I just let the idea simmer. I stuck a pin in it. I did more research. I really listened to my intuition. In the past I have gotten really excited about certain "diets" and jumped head first, only to get overwhelmed and give up shortly after. I have always been passionate about health and I'll be the first one to try a new supplement, superfood, oils, whatever. So that means I've tried a LOT of things. Truth be told, High Carb Raw Vegan is so easy! I thought I would be hungry all of the time, but I'm not. I eat about 3,000 calories a day, mostly from fruit. 90% of my diet is carbs (mostly fruit carbs) 5% fats and 5% protein.

Right now I am living  Raw til 4, meaning everything I eat before 4 PM is tons of fruit. At least 800-1000 calories per meal. Then for dinner I have cooked food and lots of leafy greens. I love coming up with recipes of my own. I drink about 2-3 liters of water per day.

Here are some of the meals I've been posting on my instagram (@thecheekywhale and @ohsnapbodywraps):

My own recipe: brown rice spaghetti wraps. Soooo good!!!!

My own recipe: Vegan chicken tacos

"Datorade" Shake. Tastes like a chocolate shake! (From Freelee the Banana Girl)

 Mango

Baked potatoes with marinara

Tangerines and pears

Pineapple ( I ate two whole pineapple by myself. The citrus ripped my mouth apart. Will not do that again!)

Jamba Juice only fruit smoothies

I will go into more detail as to why this lifestyle is so amazing and why I think EVERYONE should try it, but I need to go to BED.

No title because I can't think of one

I just wanted to devle into "combined" eating for a moment here, because I'm constantly amazed by how much its benefited me.

Well, combined eating is what I've done for....I don't even know, 8 months now? I first started doing it to treat my gastritis.
Anyways, I know I've talked about it before, but here I go again. Get over it.
I'm sorry, that was rude. Don't hate me.

Anyways.
Due to my stomach problems + growths on my thyroid, I was unable to work out or even sing (whaaaa????) for about 6 months. It really sucked because those two things provide many an endorphin for this girl.
But it WORKED, and not only that,  I kept the weight off. I even lost about 15 lbs which I had unexplainabley gained. My stomach was flat. It was marvelous.
So I've kept it up for many reasons:

1. The science behind it is legitimate. Combined eating is not only for those of us with serious stomach/intestinal issues. It is for everyone.
Foods are either alkaline or acidic. And they break down differently. So if you're eating two foods that don't break down in the same way, your body fights to digest it properly, and if it can't, you end up with food rotting in your intestines, weight gain, and health problems not limited to the gastrointestinal area. (Oh my gosh. I typed out gastrointestinal and was totally expecting spell check to light up, but it didn't. Did I seriously spell it right? I AM A GENIUS)
It can cause headaches, bad skin, poor sleep, etc. etc. etc. Its also been linked to cancer, crohns disease, and more. Yikes.
I don't like the idea of food sitting in my body far longer than it should, rotting and creating bacteria that can cause serious problems.  SICK dude.

2. I looked hot. Thas right. Without working out, I still looked fairly nice in the nude. Totally worth it.

3. It helped alleviate my symptoms of gastritis and eventually cured it. Rock on.

Not only have I kept up with the combined eating, but I have also really cut back on animal products. I've read a lot of books about the negative side of eating our animal friends, and there is definitely more negative than positive. I've slowly cut out meat, which hasn't been hard since it's hard for me to get through my system anyways. I hardly ever drink milk, although I have really craved it since getting pregnant.
The dangerous side of becoming a vegetarian or a vegan is losing the calcium and protein that we get from those sources. BUT, we have to remember that we can get those from plenty of other sources as well.
So if you decide to become a veggie, then do you research so you're getting the proper nutrients your bod needs.

The best argument I've heard about eating meat is this:
"All animals in the wild eat what they were biologically designed to eat, the way they were designed to eat it. Each animal was designed by nature to properlydigest the type of food they eat. For instance, the meat eaters (lions, tigers, sharks) all have sharp pointed teeth for ripping and tearing prey and relatively short digestive tracts (about 3 times the length of their torso) for fast elimination of the decomposing flesh they've eaten. The plant and grain eaters, on the other hand, have more squared-off teeth for grinding their food, and their digestive tracts are longer (8 to 12 times the length of their torso) to allow for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients from plants.

We are the ONLY species in the animal kingdom that doesn't eat what we are designed by nature to be able to digest. Take a look at your teeth. Unless you're a vampire, you don't have fangs-your teeth are more squared off-designed for grinding plants and grains. Our saliva has an enzyme that is for digestion of complex carbs and plants. Flesh eaters don't even have that enzyme. Our digestive track is 30 feet long-again, designed for the digestion and absorption of nutrients from plants. Like it or not, our physiology tells us that we're made to eat mostly plants. You can't argue with mother nature."

============

OH my gosh this has gotten so long.

Anywhoodles, the recipe book I use the most is by Sherri Brescia, whom I found out about the combined eating thing from.
The link is on my sidebar under "how I stay healthy". The recipe book is called "Great Taste No Pain", but it doesn't mean its only for sick people. The recipes are awesome and it's pretty much all I've used for a long time:
Great Taste No Pain: 112 of the Most Delicious, Delectable, Scrumptious, Yummy and Healthy Recipes
The Borscht rocks my world, as well as the Pan Bagnet.

Here is the recipe for Borscht:

5-6 large fresh beets, peeled and sliced into matchstick-sized pieces
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 cup olive oil
2 celery stalks, sliced
1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
2 cups shredded green cabbage
1 pkg. vegetarian burger crumbles (optional)
6-8 cups veggie broth (use more if a more brothy soup is desired)
1 large or 2 small bay leaves
Pinch of thyme
Salt and pepper taste
Sour cream for garnish (optional)

Have all vegetables prepared ahead of time.

Heat olive oil in a soup pot over medium heat and add onion. Saute 5 minutes. Add celery and carrots and saute 5 more minutes. Add red pepper and saute a few minutes more. Add broth, beets, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir in cabbage and veggie burger crumbles (if using), return to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until all vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaf.

Serve in bowls with a dollop of sour cream in the middle for garnish if desired.

getting creative in the kitchen

(this was my dinner. looks good, don't it?)

I'm having so much fun coming up with yummy vegan recipes. Today I made these "burritos". I just made them up as I went along.

Whole wheat tortillas fried in coconut oil
Brown rice (I like the short grain)
Red bell pepper, diced
Imitation beef (sounds gross, but it was actually really good)
Avocado
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Ground mustard powder
Organic coconut oil

-Saute red peppers and ground beef together in coconut oil, adding garlic, onion, and ground mustard powders to taste
-Cook rice (I made one cup of rice in my rice cooker. Its serves two)
-Fry whole wheat tortilla's in coconut oil (just enough to cover each side)
-Fry avocado slices in remaining coconut oil, add a pinch of sea salt

Put it all together, top with some salsa, and TA DA! You have yourself a fast, delicious, and HEALTHY meal.
Like I said, I just made it up as I went along, so you can tweak it however you want.

Sarah, you asked me how I cut dairy out. Well, I still have it sometimes, but I drink Rice Milk or Almond milk. I hate Soy. And I buy veggie cheese. It's good. I'm not a poop about it, though. I'm not like "Oh, NO, I REFUSE to eat dairy! How dare you even suggest such a thing!" but I have cut WAY back. I just eat a lot of veggies, fruit, whole grains, and I get my protein from sunflower seeds, leafy greens, protein shakes, and legumes.

Tom has been a great sport about it, but I still buy REAL meat for him. I don't expect him to change his ways just because I have. And he's been really good about trying my recipes.
